what is a flipped classroom?

Picture
The flipped classroom is not an online course.  It is a way to engage students and make them more active in the learning process.  Students watch a short video lecture for homework and take notes and complete practice examples.  In the classroom these problems are evaluated by the students and teacher to address difficulties and misconceptions.  Students then move on to complete critical thinking questions, hands on activities, discussions etc.  in a collaborative format to further their understanding of the topic.  The class is completly student-centered as the teacher becomes the facilator instead of a lecturer.  Instruction is differentiated giving students more freedom to choose how they learn the material.  For more information please click on the picture to the left.

Why I use flipped Instruction?

Students work in teams of 3 or 4 to apply scientific concepts to practice problems focusing on a central phenomena.  Students are encouraged to help each other with the problems and utilize the teacher as a "coach" to guide them.  Research shows that student retention is increased dramatically through practice, repetition and student to student teaching/discourse.

what is edpuzzle?

EDpuzzle allows you to sign in to watch video homework assignments and answer interactive questions pertaining to the lesson.  After submitting your answer to a question you will get an immediate response as to whether or not you answered the question incorrectly as well as view the correct answer.  If you do not get a question right you will be able to go back and rewatch that section of the video for more clarification before moving on to the remainder of the lesson.   You can view the homework assignments via the direct video link located under my unit pages or by logging in to the EDpuzzle website on any web browser.  In addition, you can download the IOS app from the App Store if you have an Apple device.  Below is a sample video lesson using EDpuzzle.

what are the benefits of edpuzzle?

Teachers can quickly see who has watched a video assignment, what time they watched it and how many questions they answered correctly.  In addition, teachers can view what questions they got wrong and their answer choices, if they rewatched a video segment as well as whole class results.  EDpuzzle makes videos engaging, interactive and provides formative assessment that can be used to drive "in class instruction" the following day.

how do i make screencast videos?

Screencastomatic (free web based screencasting program) I use Powerpoints to deliver the content and write on them using the interactive white board in my class or I use various IPAD apps such as Splashtop to remotely connect to my desktop over WiFi so that I can write on my IPAD using a stylus.

what website builder do i use?

Weebly  (free website builder with drag and drop feature...paid version has extra features)
